Detailed Procedures for Adoption

1.   Once the application is received, we will call all your references.  If your references are satisfactory, we will schedule a home visit.  Please provide non-family references.

2.   You will be able to adopt any dog or puppy from the available dogs in the rescue, with final approval of NCRR (the dog must match your lifestyle and family dynamics should you have children or other pets, etc.).

3.   Applications will be handled on a first-come, first-serve basis.  When the application is received, the date will be noted.  Dogs will be adopted out using this methodology.  Application processing varies depending on when home visits are scheduled; therefore, the receipt date of the adoption application will be the determining factor for placement of dogs.

4.  The NCRR adoption contract REQUIRES that you take the dog you adopt to obedience class and provide the certificate of completion to NCRR.

5.  NCRR does adopt to states outside of North Carolina.  It is the adopter’s responsibility to make arrangements to pick up the dog when the adoption paperwork has been finalized.  NCRR does not allow dogs to be shipped via aircraft.

6.  NCRR does not have a facility and is an all volunteer-run organization.  Dogs are housed in foster homes .   Potential applicants MUST BE approved before talking with foster “parents” or visiting dogs.

7.  An adoption contract is required, and the adoption donation is $275 (payable by Cashier’s Check, Money Order or PayPal) less the $25 filing donation.  This fee includes any known and necessary (required for the well being of the dog) medical treatments the dog may need before coming to the adopter’s home.

8.  The adopter must bring his/her own collar and leash when picking up the dog.   Heartworm preventative is not transferable from Foster Home to adopter.  It is recommended that the adopter purchase a crate if he/she does not own one.  Foster “parents” have been instructed to crate-train the dogs.

Extra Info and Legal Info

As a non-profit organization, we strive to keep our costs down and to meet these costs by asking a donation from every adoptor. Our requested donation is $275.00 and includes spay/neuter as appropriate, vet exam and any needed vet care, worming and shots as appropriate as well as a heartwom test and placed on heartworm preventative as appropriate. This cost is higher than local shelters because we are not subsidized. Some dogs cost us much more than this and others less but by having a standard donation request, no dog is unadoptable because he cost us too much.

Upon adoption completion, the remaining $250.00 donation* is required.

*You will need to consult your tax preparer in order to determine the eligibility of the tax deductible amount.

All dogs are spayed or neutered prior to adoption. There are special cases when this may be delayed due to health, age or weight of dog. Spay, neuter and shots are given as appropriate for age and health as determined by our vet
